Description
Nadia is relatively petite at 5'3" but she makes up for it with a no-nonsense attitude and refusal to back down from anyone. A faint olive tint to her complexion reveals Mediterranean heritage but her accent is pure Chicago. Her dark brown eyes are shrewd and tend to reveal her emotions even when she might rather keep them hidden. She has brown hair, sunbleached closer to blonde at the ends, which is kept short most of the time in a modernish aysemmetric style that shows off natural waves. There are a few tattoos scattered about her body but they are not generally on public display.
Her usual style is casual, trousers more often than skirts, heels only for special occasions, and simple silver jewellery. When working she is still new enough to her Detective rank that her clothing tends to resemble uniform, heavy on button down shirts and sensible footwear. Occasionally she will indulge in makeup but it's more of an evening out thing, Nadia is not someone who feels the need to be perfectly coiffed and primped before she steps out of the door in the morning - her only real requirement is coffee, ideally black and sweetened.
History
A Chicago girl born and bred, Nadia still has strong Italian roots. Her family moved to America in the early 1920s and to Chicago shortly thereafter, as the younger children of a sprawling clan occupying parts of both Palermo and Calabria they saw the States as a means of making their own name. Indeed the Tofana name has a long and...storied history reaching back to the 17th century poisoner Giulia Tofana who specialised in assisting women in the disposal of inconvenient husbands. Family legend has it that the recipe for Aqua Tofana is still floating around some ancient recipe book or family bible if a person is willing to hunt for long enough, alas poisoning is rather more difficult to get away with thanks to modern science.
Enrolling in the police academy was a move mostly based in teenage rebellion but she has since proven her skills and her worth. While she freely admits that the institution has its issues, Nadia is one of those people who believes she can improve on it from the inside. When she found she'd carved out a niche for herself she made the choice to try and progress despite the difficulties caused by her family name and the assumptions that go with it. There are still those who think she got her promotion because of some kind of corruption or nepotism (not that they'd object to it normally, but she is both relatively young and almost painfully honest at times). Still, the family turned up en-masse to her swearing in as though daring anyone to make a big deal of it. Dubious relatives aside, Nadia herself has a spotless record and after a single incident early on, has made it clear that she will arrest family members if they give her cause.

Mortal - She has a few clues that the supernatural world exists but no idea that she is anything more than 'normal'.
CPD - She is the law! Whichever side you interact with mortal law enforcement on, you may have met Nadia.
Strega - Nadia has a fascination with all things occult that comes from her Italian born great grandmother. While she doesn't tout it around at work, she's willing to read the cards for people and can occasionally be found hanging around the Rook and Crown off duty.
Criminal ties - Much as she tries to distance herself from her family it is impossible to ignore the fact that Nadia does have blood ties to one of the organised crime families who have had their fingers all manner of Chicago's pies since the heyday of prohibition. Sometimes those contacts come in useful if she is taking down the 'opposition', more often they are problematic for her since everyone assumes she is on the take.
