About a Girl

What do you get when you take a sweet and semi-nerdy, teenage girl and lock her up in a dark cellar for what feels like an eternity? If you starve her of food and light until the very darkness itself becomes part of her? If you throw her scraps in the form of the remains of your many victims until her hunger and starvation force her to develop a taste for flesh?

You get Mae.

Taken at the age of sixteen by a True Fae known as 'The Crone' or 'The Witch in Shadow', Mae Duponte was stolen from the world like so many before her. Whisked off to The Crone's realm beyond the thorny hedges, Mae was locked within the dark cellars and basements of the Witch's cottage maze and left to starve in the darkness until she was twisted into something hungry and wicked.

Unlike The Crone's other victims, Mae obeyed. Mae was a Good Girl. She eagerly ate the scraps The Crone left her to clean up and learned to never question where, or from whom, they came from. She obediently got out of the way when The Crone visited the cellars. Looked away when The Crone did not want to be watched. Even kept her mouth shut and never spoke a word once she learned that The Crone hated the sound of her 'lecherous little voice'. Yes. Mae was a Good Girl and made The Crone so proud.

Then one night The Crone was distracted and left the cellar door open when she departed. Was this a test? Would The Crone be mad if Mae was caught outside of the cellars without permission? Surely not. Mae was a Good Girl, after all. And so she escaped those cellars and made her way out of her Keeper's cottage maze. She was lost in the thorns of the Hedge for a long while before she eventually made her way back out several long years after her initial disappearance.
