Arnaud, Five, Faith as GM

16 November, 2022

In which Arnaud and Five go to take care of some gangsters owing Faith money, to repay the debt Arnaud has to Faith. Things go wrong and right, and something weird happens.

It's a cold night, with a strong wind blowing from the east. The half-moon is shrouded in clouds, lending this street a dark, quiet look. The neighborhood, somewhere deep in Chicago's West Town, is not a good one. It's the kinda place where the sounds of violence and pain are all too common, where the people keep their doors and windows barred and locked and never look outside. Can't be a witness if you just don't look.

Faith provided some information, the building where these young would-be gangsters live is a large apartment building, one of those places that stacks rooms upon rooms upon rooms, piling people in together. The Nosferatu was sure they were on the top floor, and lived out of a couple of the apartments there, but her details were sparse. Inside, in the foyer, the light fluorescent lighting flickers with an annoying buzz and the smell is unpleasant, refuse and sweat. Two people stand just near the stairs, a guy dressed too well for the neighborhood and another with a look of desperation about him, pleading for his next fix. The stairs beckon upwards, and a sign on the elevators reads 'out of order'.

Arnaud doesn't just walk into this den of scum - he does some odd preparations outside in the dark of an alley. First he takes out a small regular spider from a match-box, and proceeds to eat it. Next he pours ice from the drink he bought at some hamburger place, and crunches it violently with his sharp teeth, eating it down. Then he insists on showing Five a very showy sort of martial arts maneuver, making an outright spectacle and theatrics there in the alley. Changelings are so damn weird.

Then he proceeds to enter the apartment complex and the disgusting foyer, his nostrils flaring at the unpleasant smells, and his eyes half-lidding because the flickering lights are annoying to someone with sensitive eyes. He spends a moment to take in the scene with an unemotional expression; his usual psycho-look, really.

While they're still in the alley, Five is relaying the bit of information she's learned about the one called 'Dracula'. Or rather Mark. She's a bit distracted while she talks, watching Arnaud go through his own preparation with a look that is both amused and impressed. There's even a bit of a smile briefly! But then it's back to business and they're stepping into the lion's den. The mortal is of course dressed in her tactical hoodie, tugging it on before they leave the alley, pants, and sneakers, all black. Five gives the pair by the stairs a curious look, but she does her best to just act like she belongs and moves to step past them.

The drug-deal in progress is sort of interrupted by Arnaud's looming presence, his natural air. The junkie is shrinking away, into the corner, wanting nothing to do with other people, as if he could curl into his grey hoodie and be unnoticed. The dealer, clear-eyed and with the grin of a scummy salesman, moves to step in the way of Five and Arnaud, as though the stairs were his territory. He's got short brown hair, a faded Metallica t-shirt over which he wears a red leather jacket, ripped jeans, and spreads his hands. "Hey friends," he says, all smarmy charm, "You lookin' to spice up your night with a few party favors?"

The junkie in the corner looks up wide eyed and jealous.

They're the oddest team, perhaps, but they're still a team. Arnaud walks alongside Five and also walks to just move past them, but when stopped he gives this dealer a more thorough and dead-eyed look, from head to toes. "Since you stopped us, you get the honor of helping us. We're looking for Brian, Alex and Dracula. Tell us where they are, and we'll let you walk out of here. If you don't, you will not WALK out of here." He smiles the sort of cruel smile of someone that hopes this dealer will not answer, so he can be violent.

There's just a simple raise of Five's brow as she's stopped, but she doesn't say anything as she easily lets Arnaud take the lead. The dragon is definitely much more naturally intimidating than she is. Still, with all the pep talks she's been given recently, she's definitely feeling a bit empowered and it shows. It's all in her gaze, brows narrowing at both of the men, giving them a sort of 'better listen to him' look regarding Arnaud. The pair definitely look like they could stir up some trouble.

In this line of work, you meet dangerous people. Desperate people. Five's entire look makes her seem like a prime target for what he's selling, but the pair cut a strange duo, and very clearly aren't interested. His smile falters, and he's clearly just that little bit nervous. "No need need for that, friend. Now why would you want to see Dracula?" He wonders, stepping aside -- he's not going to prevent them from passing, at the very least, but the question itself is left unanswered!

Arnaud takes some bashing and is now bruised.

Arnaud has the patience of a 3-year old, so he doesn't even hesitate or think twice - apart from not wanting to kill this guy, so he is at least THAT much coherent. He starts throwing punches at the dealer with wild abandon, but maybe he should stick to using his claws or teeth, cause he doesn't do much more than scare this one off and even gets punched on his arm enough to leave a small bruise. It's with some surprise - and sulkiness - he watches the man dart off to the outside, and his Beast brain screams at him to pursue, but the coldly logical part remembers the actual mission, so he stops himself. "Fuck off then, you waste of space," he mutters and shows the finger to the back of the escaping dealer. He takes a deep breath and avoids looking at Five, cause this wasn't very impressive.

On the other hand, Five doesn't seem very bothered as the 'guard' escapes after a quick tussle with Arnaud. She even steps out of his way to avoid getting hit on the way out. The dragon's reaction doesn't go unnoticed though. Five gives the other presumed mortal a quick look. "You should leave," she heavily encourages him to listen to Arnaud. Then the mortal steps back over toward Arnaud, briefly giving him a reassuring touch on the arm. "You want to head up first?" she questions with a nod toward the stairs.

Arnaud eye-narrows at the junkie and seem on the verge to go for him next, but Five distracts him successfully. He nods at her and starts up the stairs with easy steps, moving with the enhancements of his contracts, every step light and easy. He won't lose his breath, that's for sure. "We know the floor, but not exactly what apartments. We'll figure it out one way or another."

The junkie in the corner watches the scuffle with wide eyes, and as the dealer stalks on out her looks after him, shoulders sagging. When Five mentions he should leave, he just stammers out a "Ye ... yeah." Then he too scampers out into the night.

The trip up the stairs to the top floor is easy enough, and the stairwell opens into a dark hallway, the white lighting pale and muted, the carpet stained and in some places, burned. There are four doors along the hallway, each a separate apartment, with an emergency fire escape at the end of the hall.

The mortal lets the dragon lead the way, keeping an eye out behind them as they ascend the sairs. Once they reach the top, she surveys the area briefly. She catches sight of the fire escape, then an alarm. Well, they don't know what apartment but they know their appearances! "Hey, you want to go stand by the escape?" Five suggests to Arnaud as she tilts her head up at him. "Make sure those three in particular don't get by?" She's already stepping over toward the alarm with a bit of a grin.

Arnaud takes one look at the doors and frowns as he considers it - knocking on all of them and asking seem a bit futile, plus they'd be alarmed. Five's brilliant idea has him grinning and giving a thumbs up; he walks over to stand by the fire escape, leaning against the wall to wait and see who will come out.

Five returns the grin as she closes the distance between her and the alarm. Once she's sure that Arnaud is ready, the places her hand on the lever and pulls down, starting the very annoying siren!

Several things happen at once.

The Siren is indeed very annoying. Noise from within the apartments, shouts of alarm. One door opens almost immediately, a grumpy looking middle aged woman in her pajamas listening to reason and fleeing for the fire escape right away! Boy is she going to be annoyed.

Another door opens, more people. The wrong people.

It's the door closest to Arnaud, on his right, that hits the money, as Alex pokes his head out into the corridor. He's got short, dirty-blond hair, a crooked nose that's been broken too many times, and a cubs jersey on. He frowns out into the corridor, not paying attention to the people, shouting behind him, "Come on man hurry up!"

Arnaud hates that ringing noise - he has very sensitive ears. They flatten backwards at the sound to protect his poor hearing, and he watches all the people coming out with great disinterest and some irritation. Why are people here, really? As if he didn't expect this to happen. Seeing Alex poke his head out, he waves to Five and then steps up to start ushering the habitants out the fire escape, while sidling closer to the apartment they want, or rather, the people inside. If they make any attempts of stepping out, he'll dive at them in an attempt of pushing them back inside. This might get messy.

Five helps to usher people out toward the fire escape, blocking the exit back down the stairs in case the trio's apartment was near. Catching sight of Arnaud blocking a face she's seen in a photo, the mortal is quick to rush toward their apartment. Naturally unassuming, she moves in close, hands on the door loosely for the moment. "Need some help?" she questions of Alex, very helpful and friendly! Sure, she might be helping them into Arnaud's grasp but still!

People filter out, moving the fire escape. Most of them don't really pay Arnaud any attention, but a few look at him warily. He's just that kinda guy.

Alex looks over Five, stepping back just a little, to close the door just that bit because apparently he doesn't want her to see into the apartment! "Nah, I'm good!" He assures quickly. Too quickly.

The distraction has worked, they know where their targets are, Five and Arnaud are working as a team. When she steps up to the door and talks, he is right behind her; he glances quickly down the corridor towards the fire escape, watching people climbing out, and then he explodes into action. He throws himself at the door with one shoulder first and with such power that it almost comes off its hinges. It slams into Alex who goes flying backwards in a tumble, and Arnaud is more or less charging inside due to this. Subtlety is not his thing.

The good thing about this neighborhood is -- people actively don't want to witness crimes! Most of them are fleeing the 'fire', but the few still lingering in the hall are pointedly ignoring anything else that might be going on. They're not involved. They don't want to be involved.

Alex screeches in surprise as Arnaud bursts through the door, hitting the ground with a grunt and a thud. Inside, it's not a huge apartment -- a combo kitchen and living space, a couch and one armchair, a really good flat screen tv on the wall, there's a hallway to the side no doubt leading to a couple of bedrooms and a bathroom.

Alex is on the floor in shock, and Brian is in the living room, at the coffee table, filling a duffle bag with THINGS. Guns, some cash, a bunch of probably stolen electronics, in a big hurry. Dracula is nowhere to be seen.

There's an impressed look as Five watches Arnaud create quite the entrance for the pair. Quickly dashing into the apartment after them, she immediately notices the guns. Staring hard at the bag for a few moments, the mortal lifts her hand and gives a quick snap. BOOM! The bag EXPLODES into a fiery ball of flame! The same hand then stretches out as she causes the flames to flicker higher and higher. Then she gets to what she deems a perfect size, holding it there. "Where is Dracula?" questions Five, in almost that same helpful tone as before, as she looks toward the others that had the unfortunate luck of encountering the pair this evening. There's an excited look that flashes in her eyes.

Alex shouts, "Drake! Get out here!" as he's scrambling up to his feet. All he's got? Is a tiny little switch-blade, which he flicks open to hold menacingly.

"Shut up. We're here from Doctor Faith, you owe her money," Arnaud says going after Alex with little regards to the knife, perhaps crazily so. At the same time he tries to maneuver so Five is behind him, wary of guns from other directions - there are two more people in the apartment. He lashes out with clawed hands, raking them across Alex' arm and drawing blood: that will leave some interesting scars, probably.

Arnaud takes some bashing and is now lightly bruised.

From the corridor, Dracula himself is ready! He steps out, takes one moment to size up the situation, and points his 9mm pistol right at Arnaud. It's loud, and he awaits his opening to not hit his friend. Center mass, the aim is good, but the magical protections of Summer are nothing for a mundane bullet. "Fucking ... Faith," he growls, frowning, and ... seemingly less surprised about Arnaud's lack of dying than one might expect.

Arnaud seems to have two modes when fighting; either he kills them in one attack, or he doesn't even hit. Maybe he should prepare more? Either or, he goes in close to Alex once more, more or less ignoring Brian - because any attacks on him are magically somehow not doing much damage anyway - and aims to slam his claws into the man's chest to take him out. What happens is he sweeps his hand just past Brian's head instead and hits nothing but empty air.

Wrapping her legs around Dracula's torso, Five manages to wrangle the man under her control. Stretching her arm out, she grips onto the forearm that is holding the gun, pressing it against Dracula's chest to temporarily take it out of play. Arnaud's real strength isn't that he's a good fighter per se - there are many that are much better than him. His real merit is that he is good at taking a beating, and he's gotten even better the 'angrier' he's gotten, his summer mantle protecting him, and his resilience something to boast about in general. He ignores Brian again with a disdain that is almost tangible; these men mean nothing to him, and he doesn't even care they are stabbing at him with knives or shooting at him. This time his claws dig deep, slamming Alex to the floor with blood spraying across the wall as he pulls his claws out. "Stay down," he growls. "If you can't pay in cash, you pay in blood. Five has one goal in mind, get that gun out of the equation! Holding on tight, the gangster named Dracula can't shake the small mortal from him. Clenching onto his wrist, she knows JUST the right way to squeeze to get him to loosen his grip. Once it hits the ground, Five narrows her brows at the man. "Give in?" She's more than happy to keep grappling him!

Alex is on the floor, and limply crawling away from Arnaud. He's bleeding, a little, and had the fight literally knocked out of him. "Fuck!" Brian is upset at how this is going, and there's a fire, and the alarm, and! He's wide eyed.

It's Dracula himself, with his gun gone, and with Five being remarkably impossible to dislodge, has him stop. "Yeah, that's enough." He says to Five. He'd put his hands up, but Five's got a hold of him tight. "Alright, message fucking received, you asshole," he growls at Arnaud.

Arnaud stands up straight and pushes some hair away from his eyes, blood from Alex being painted on his forehead. He stands relaxed and psychopathic amidst the fire and carnage, revelling in it. "Then," he says and smiles at Dracula, a slow and victorious smile, "you will not repeat your mistake. Because if you /do/, this will seem like a pleasant dream. You will know the true meaning of suffering."

Brian is backing away, and with Five letting him go, Dracula does the thing, raising his hands in that universal gesture of not being a threat. "Fuckin' hell man I ain't going to that creepy bitch ever again. Just fucking... fine." He's backing away from Arnaud, against the wall there, spooked by the dragon's threats.

All three of them, cowering before the Lost and the mortal. Except Alex. Alex is just groaning in pain.

"Keep an eye on them," Arnaud asks of Five, nodding at her as he moves down the hall to check the other rooms. He doesn't trust these guys, but he's also magically prepared for any attempts at surprise attacks, so he's not concerned. He opens the first door to look inside.

Five gives a quick nod! Stepping over, she stands near the door to serve as both lookout and making sure nobody runs out!

The first bedroom door opens into what looks like a bedroom, but when Arnaud steps into the room, it's suddenly dark. It's ... not a bedroom? It's a small room, barely enough to hold 5 people comfortably.. Wooden floorboards that don't belong up in this apartment, wallpaper that's been scratched at. A single globe dangles from the ceiling, with a string that one could pull to turn it on. For Arnaud's ears only, there's an amused, sultry, feminine laugh. And then the door slams shut behind him suddenly, leaving him in the black.

Brian has moved to help Alex with his wounds, and Dracula is scowling, but there's something in his gaze, a grim satisfaction as Arnaud goes off to explore the apartment.

Arnaud steps into the room, door slams shut, the laughter is heard - and his hackles rise. He whirls to check the door and it's not /there/. This is all too familiar, and yet entirely not at the same time; he is fairly sure he isn't in the Hedge. Small mercies. His nostrils flair, his ears twist and turn, and he crouches down and focuses his other sense; the one that can feel anything magical or supernatural. He tilts his head and feels that the room itself is wrong, and something else he can't see. "Your problem," he says, "is that you locked yourself in here with me."

Five quickly looks over at the room as the door slams shut suddenly. Brows raise when she hears Arnauld. Returning her attention to the other, a frown spreads across her lips. Her gaze flits between them before landing over on Alex and Brian. "Who else is here?" she questions as she closes the distance between the pair, brows narrowing at them.

In the room, there is a shift. Something changes, perhaps as if to the unspoken threat from Arnaud. He watches as the words 'See you soon!' appear upon the wall, as though suddenly burned into being, scorched into the wall paper. And then ... he's standing in the bedroom, just like he was originally stepping into. All traces of that weird little room are gone, and the sense of being in the presence of SOMETHING, fades as well.

Brian, who's gotten a minor first aid kit to help out Alex, looks up and swallows. "Just .." --

Dracula cuts him off. "Don't you fucking dare." He snarls at Brian.

But Five's too threatening! "There's ... no one else here," he says, clearly wanting to say more, but more afraid of his buddy than of Five.

"Whatever, bitch," Arnaud says and shows his finger to the words on the wall, his patience waning with all this bullshit. He rakes his claws over the wall and the words, for good measure, then whirls around and throws the door open with a hard bang as he stalks back out to the rest. "What the HELL was that in the room?" he asks, repeating Five's question but with more volatile anger.

Five only glances briefly at Arnaud as he emerges safely from the room. Returning her attention toward Brian, she watches him for a few long moments. Brows furrow gently before she takes a step back. Then another. Turning, she steps close enough to place a brief but gentle touch on Arnaud's arm. "We should go. I think they've gotten the message," she suggests, giving the other mortals(?) another look before focusing on the dragon.

Dracula was prepared to be all smug and everything, and Arnaud flies out of the room full of fury. "I ... don't know," he admits awkwardly. It seems true, too. He really has no idea. Alex is more or less out of it, but Brian is quiet as he watches everything going on, meeting Five's gaze for just a moment before glancing away.

Arnaud is reconsidering the merit of murdering someone, but since he said he wouldn't, and Five is touching his arm to remind him that he's also human, he steps backwards towards the door with her. He doesn't say anything more to these thugs - he just shoots Dracula a cold look as he says he doesn't know. He's making sure Five is safely outside before he too turns to leave. "There was something in that room," he murmurs through gritted teeth to his partner, leaning closer to say so. "Something supernatural. But it left, after writing on the wall that we'd meet again." He punches a wall in the corridor, because he's frustrated.

A brow raises at Arnaud's reveal. As they're walking away, she glances over her shoulder toward the apartment they're leaving. "We'll look into it," she replies as she looks back to him, frowning a bit at the punch. "Let's go grab something to eat! I have some extra cash and we need to celebrate that ass kicking," she tells him with a grin.

Arnaud tilts his head and is thinking hard. Some of that felt familiar - he's seen similar powers, both from his time in the Hedge, and from vampires. But he's also not one to be bothered by trouble that he can't solve by punching it in the face, so he'll look into it later. "Yeah, I'm hungry and I'm broke, so that sounds good." He pats Five on the head and relaxes. "You were awesome."

"/We/ were awesome," Five corrects Arnaud with a grin. Then off they go in search of the perfect place to celebrate their violent victory!
