Elodie

A servant is the true reflection of his master.
~ Arthur M. Jolly; "The Lady Demands Satisfaction" (2018)

Description

Elodie is a woman of average height and immaculate grooming. Her black hair is cut into a short and sensible bob, her attire is almost invariably understated and spotless, and her posture is the dream of any military drill instructor. Her eyes are hazel. She is thin and wiry, and she tends to move with short, abrupt motions.

Elodie is a woman of average height and slender build. Her skin is tanned a dull copper color, with thin black lines tattooed around every joint in her arms and fingers that give the appearance of articulation. Her eyes are bright hazel, her teeth are shining white, and her hair is a rich and burnished ebony. She wears it in a severe bob, cut just above her shoulders. When her back is exposed, a small black keyhole can be seen just between her shoulderblades, no more than an inch tall.

Background

Elodie lived a lonely and unhappy life before her abduction to Arcadia. Subsequent events have not improved it. Her parents, socialites of old money, estranged themselves from their withdrawn and bookish daughter by benign neglect, and her relationship with her two brothers was chilly at best. She spent her time in Meriden, Connecticut, whiling away her hours as an assistant librarian in the small city's single library. In 2019, her exasperated manager assigned the reclusive Elodie an assignment he hoped would bring her out of her shell; in preparation for the annual Halloween Fair, he told her to research local mythology and incorporate it into an entertaining display for local children.

Instead, it consumed her.

It started with the unregistered book. A tome far older than what was usually kept in circulation, shelved far from where it should be, totally absent from the electronic records of the institution. Nevertheless, it had the appropriate labels, and its inside cover was stamped with the seal of the Meriden Library, however old. The new library software, true to form, was having one of its recalcitrant moods, and so the book stubbornly remained unentered into any official records. And so Elodie began to read Curiosities of the Metacomet. A puzzle emerged; threads appeared. Absurd claims of supernatural activities in the mountains, ley lines and portals to distant lands, sacred sites of nature and profane spaces dedicated to darkness and to blood. She found more books, more web sites, more information. Deepweb gave way to darkweb, darkweb to even stranger protocols. Her supervisor grew more irate as her duties grew more neglected. It was an obsession she could not help, and so on midnight of the day she intended to submit her resignation, Elodie broke into Castle Craig and ascended it to watch the stars.

What to say of Castle Craig? A stone tower constructed by an eccentric in 1900, of unknown design, very explicitly closed and locked to the public outside of daylight hours. Elodie did not expect the climb to take so long in the dark. She certainly did not expect to emerge in the middle of a chaotic market beneath what was very decidedly a noon-day sun. And then they took her to meet the master.

Years of servitude broke her body and her spirit. A leg gave out and was replaced by another's; an arm failed and was exchanged. Flesh itself began to refuse her, and she slowly grew alien to herself, meat and muscle transformed to metal and spring. The key was the final indignity and the final bond, and when it wound down into stillness, she was thrown into the dark, placed alongside bone and cloth and steel. Her mind sought the release of madness, but there is no place for those built of coil and gear among the mad. And then? A sudden twisting of the key, a body and mind made active, a frantic flight from the cycle of destruction and creation. Elodie emerged upon the shores of Lake Michigan in 2022, into three beings of the Accord who were pursuing aquatic goals. They took her in, explained the basics of her new life.

And now? Now she must start anew. But Timber Sledge has a ledger, and he will notice the loss. And Timber Sledge will not suffer a loss.
